Discipline is a process of guiding behavior. It helps children understand their feelings and express them appropriately. It encourages children to be sensitive and cooperative with others.

Children’s behavior is influenced by their development, their environment and the adults who care for them.

Caring Adults:

bulletrespect and enjoy children
bulletpraise their efforts
bulletmodel kindness and patience
bulletuse calm, helpful language
bulletset clear, age-appropriate limits
bulletoffer choices
bulletteach children what to do instead of focussing on what not to do
bulletteach children to solve problems with words
bulletunderstand that children's misbehavior is normal and natural
bulletfocus on the child's behavior rather than on the child's self

Young children do not develop well when they are pressured, frightened, threatened or punished.

As per section 31 of Child Care Regulations:  Under no circumstances may children be humiliated, neglected, isolated, spoken to in a harsh manner, deprived of food or other basic needs, slapped or spanked.
