Our philosophy takes an eclectic approach based on the theories of Erikson, Skinner, Thorndike and Gessell, with particular emphasis on Piagets theory of cognitive development. We are slowly incorporating aspects of Reggio Emilia "project-based teaching". We feel that the role of the environment is critical...that learning occurs through experimental interaction with the environment...discovery, observation and questioning. The children move at their own rate by contributing spontaneously and communicatively to supervised short-term or long-term projects that they have initiated. Curriculum content considers age-appropriateness in all developmental areas with emphasis on promoting friendships and increasing feelings of self-worth. All children have strengths as well as needs. Our common goal is the development of skills, attitudes, and behavior that will allow children to deal effectively with the world in which they live. We consider parent knowledge to be a great asset. It is important that teachers and parents work together to achieve common goals. We believe in providing equal opportunity for ALL children. |
